Your move, step by step
Your internet when moving from France to Hungary: what to arrange and when
Before you leave France
Moving abroad is one of the legitimate reasons (motif légitime) French providers accept for ending a box contract early. With proof of your residence outside France, such as your Hungarian rental contract, you avoid the early termination penalties of your commitment period. A fixed closing fee may still apply, depending on your provider. Under article L224-39 of the Code de la consommation, your provider closes the line within 10 days of receiving your request, or on a later date you choose. Send your cancellation by registered letter, plan the date so your connection stays active until moving day, and return the box and any TV decoder afterwards.
Around the same time, enter your new address in Hungary in the availability check and place your order. That way your internet is planned before the moving truck leaves.
When you arrive in Hungary
Fiber is installed within 2–3 working days; someone needs to be at the address during the appointment. With 5G home internet, the pre-configured router is waiting at your new address: plug it in and you are online. You do not need a Hungarian address card, ID card or phone number to order, so you are not waiting for your registration with the Hungarian authorities.
What about your French SIM card?
Within the EU you can use your French SIM at home prices, but roaming is meant for occasional trips. If you live in Hungary and keep using your French SIM for months, your operator can check your usage over a four-month period and add capped roaming charges. With unlimited home internet and WiFi at home, you rely far less on mobile data.
