Your move, step by step
Your internet when moving from Switzerland to Hungary: what to arrange and when
Before you leave Switzerland
Your Swiss internet subscription does not end automatically when you move abroad. Check the minimum term and notice period in your contract, and ask your provider well in advance whether it accepts early termination when you move abroad. Cancel in writing so you have proof.
You also deregister at your commune. The rules differ per commune: some ask you to report your departure in person, weeks before you leave, and to settle your taxes first. After deregistering you receive an Abmeldebestätigung. Keep it safe: you need it for your health insurance and pension fund, and your provider may ask for it too.
Around the same time, enter your new address in Hungary in the availability check and place your order. That way your internet is planned before the moving truck leaves.
When you arrive in Hungary
Fiber is installed within 2–3 working days; someone needs to be at the address during the appointment. With 5G home internet, the pre-configured router is waiting at your new address: plug it in and you are online. You do not need a Hungarian address card, ID card or phone number to order, so you are not waiting for your registration with the Hungarian authorities.
What about your Swiss SIM card?
Switzerland is not part of the EU’s roam-like-at-home area. Using your Swiss SIM in Hungary is charged according to the roaming terms of your Swiss plan, and unless your plan includes roaming in Europe, data costs can add up quickly. With unlimited home internet and WiFi at home, you rely far less on mobile data.
Questions along the way? Our support speaks German and French, from your first question to installation day.
