Your move, step by step
Your internet when moving from the Netherlands to Hungary: what to arrange and when
Before you leave the Netherlands
Your Dutch internet contract does not end automatically when you emigrate. Most Dutch providers let you end it early when you move abroad, often through a separate emigration procedure, and ask for proof that you have deregistered from your municipality. If you will live outside the Netherlands for more than 8 months in a year, you deregister from the BRP between 5 days before your departure and the day you leave. Ask your municipality for an international proof of deregistration (internationaal bewijs van uitschrijving) and send it to your provider.
Before that last week, enter your new address in Hungary in the availability check and place your order. That way your internet is planned before the moving truck leaves.
When you arrive in Hungary
Fiber is installed within 2–3 working days; someone needs to be at the address during the appointment. With 5G home internet, the pre-configured router is waiting at your new address: plug it in and you are online. You do not need a Hungarian address card, ID card or phone number to order, so you are not waiting for your registration with the Hungarian authorities.
What about your Dutch SIM card?
Within the EU you can use your Dutch SIM at home prices, but roaming is meant for occasional trips. If you live in Hungary and keep using your Dutch SIM for months, your operator can check your usage over a four-month period and add capped roaming charges. With unlimited home internet and WiFi at home, you rely far less on mobile data.
