Your move, step by step
Your internet when moving from Austria to Hungary: what to arrange and when
Before you leave Austria
Your Austrian internet contract does not end automatically when you move abroad. Many Austrian internet contracts have a minimum term of 12 or 24 months. If your provider cannot deliver its service at your new address, early termination may be possible, but the conditions differ per provider. Ask about them well before your move and cancel in writing, ideally by registered letter, so you have proof.
You also deregister your home in Austria. You do this at the registration office within three days before or after you leave your accommodation, and on the Meldezettel you indicate that you are moving abroad. Keep the confirmation you receive: providers may ask for proof of your move.
Around the same time, enter your new address in Hungary in the availability check and place your order. That way your internet is planned before the moving truck leaves.
When you arrive in Hungary
Fiber is installed within 2–3 working days; someone needs to be at the address during the appointment. With 5G home internet, the pre-configured router is waiting at your new address: plug it in and you are online. You do not need a Hungarian address card, ID card or phone number to order, so you are not waiting for your registration with the Hungarian authorities.
What about your Austrian SIM card?
Within the EU you can use your Austrian SIM at home prices, but roaming is meant for occasional trips. If you live in Hungary and keep using your Austrian SIM for months, your operator can check your usage over a four-month period and add capped roaming charges. With unlimited home internet and WiFi at home, you rely far less on mobile data.
