Your move, step by step
Your internet when moving from the UK to Hungary: what to arrange and when
Before you leave the UK
Your UK broadband contract does not end because you move abroad. Many contracts run for 18 or 24 months, and leaving before the end of the minimum term usually means paying early termination charges. Ask your provider how it handles a move abroad and give notice in good time; most providers ask for around 30 days. Return any router or TV box if your provider asks for it, to avoid equipment charges.
Once you know your new address in Hungary, enter it in the availability check and place your order from home. That way your internet is planned before the moving truck leaves.
When you arrive in Hungary
Fiber is installed within 2–3 working days; someone needs to be at the address during the appointment. With 5G home internet, the pre-configured router is waiting at your new address: plug it in and you are online. You do not need a Hungarian address card or a Hungarian phone number to order, so you are not waiting for your residence permit or registration to be processed.
What about your UK SIM card?
Since Brexit, UK networks are no longer bound by the EU’s roam-like-at-home rules. Some charge a daily fee for using your phone in the EU, others include Europe with a fair-use limit, and those inclusive deals are designed for trips rather than for living abroad. Check your plan before you go. With unlimited home internet and WiFi at home, you rely far less on mobile data.
