Internet in Rural Hungary: What Are Your Options?

Internet in rural Hungary

You found the house. Big garden, quiet street, a view that beats anything you had in the city, and a price that made the decision easy. Then someone asks the question that stops the whole daydream: what about the internet?

It’s the right question. Getting online outside the big cities has a reputation for being difficult, and some of that reputation is deserved. But a lot of it is out of date. Here’s an honest look at your options for internet in rural Hungary, what each one really delivers, and how to find out what’s available at your exact address.

Start with the only answer that matters: your address

Coverage in Hungary isn’t a regional thing. It’s a street level thing. Two villages twenty kilometres apart can have completely different options, and so can two houses on opposite ends of the same road.

That’s why guessing is a waste of time. Enter your address in our availability check and you’ll see what’s possible at your exact address: fiber, 5G or both, with real prices. That single check saves most people a week of phone calls.

Option 1: Fiber, and yes, it reaches further than you think

The biggest misconception about internet in rural Hungary is that fiber stops at the city limits. It doesn’t. Hungary’s best fiber network reaches far beyond Budapest and the regional centres, and many small towns and villages are already connected.

If fiber is at your address, it’s usually the best choice: a wired connection with the same speed day and night, ideal for working from home and video calls. You pick the plan that matches your household:

  • FastFiber 300 for one or two people, streaming and remote work
  • GigaFiber 1000 for families with a lot of devices
  • GigaFiber 2000 for gamers, content creators and heavy users
  • Up to 8 Gbps for the most demanding setups

Every plan includes a modern WiFi 6 router and truly unlimited data, with no bandwidth shaping in the evening. With a 2-year plan, installation by a certified technician is free. See all plans and prices.

Option 2: 5G home internet

If fiber hasn’t reached your road yet, 5G home internet is often the best option for internet in rural Hungary. A router picks up the 5G signal from the nearest mast and shares it over WiFi. No cable, no digging and no technician visit.

With our 5G home internet, FastWave 5G 400, you get speeds of up to 400 Mbps and unlimited data for €59 per month, with nationwide coverage on Hungary’s best network. The router arrives pre-configured: plug it in and you’re online.

In rural areas, the signal depends on your distance to the mast and what sits between you and it. Hills, forests and thick old walls all have an effect. Place the router high and near a window for the best result.

Option 3: DSL over the old copper line

Many rural properties still have a copper phone line, and DSL runs over it. It’s usually available and usually cheap.

The problem is distance. The further you are from the local exchange, the slower it gets, and rural properties are almost always far. Speeds that look acceptable on paper often arrive as something much less useful, especially when several people are online at once. If you have an alternative, take the alternative.

Option 4: Satellite internet

Low orbit satellite internet now covers essentially the whole country, including places no cable will reach for years. For genuinely isolated properties, that’s a real breakthrough.

The trade-offs are cost and consistency. Hardware and monthly fees sit well above a standard fixed line, and heavy weather can affect the signal. It’s the right choice when nothing else reaches you, and an expensive one when something else does.

No good option yet? Team up with your neighbours

Sometimes neither fiber nor a strong 5G signal reaches a village yet. That doesn’t have to be the end of the story. When enough households in an area sign up, we request a fiber extension or build a local wireless network. Let us know where you are, and we’ll look at the options together.

What we’d actually recommend

Check your address first, always. If fiber is there and you work from home, take it. If fiber isn’t available yet, or you want internet in a holiday home without arranging a technician, 5G home internet is the easiest choice. Satellite makes sense for properties that are genuinely remote, and DSL is the last resort.

And remember that this list changes. Coverage for internet in rural Hungary keeps expanding into areas that had no realistic option two years ago. An address that came back empty last year is worth checking again.

Why we built this

When we first moved to Hungary, getting connected was far more complicated than it should have been. Paperwork, vague pricing, and support in a language we didn’t speak. So we built something better, first for ourselves and then for anyone in the same position. Our motto says it plainly: Effortlessly Connected.

We support English, Dutch, German and French. You order online without Hungarian paperwork, and our team contacts you within one to two working days. You get a quality router, a clean setup and personal support from real people. No hidden fees, no unnecessary forms, no call centre runaround.

Living outside the city shouldn’t mean settling for a worse connection. Check your address and see what internet in rural Hungary looks like at your door.
